This American University Scholarships award consists of a prize of € 1000 for a thesis to win, to be published in African Studies Collection ASC.

Eligibilty Criteria: Any final-year student who has completed his Masters thesis with distinction (80% or higher or a Dutch rating of at least 8) at a university in Africa or the Netherlands can apply. This thesis should be based on independent empirical research related to Sub-Saharan Africa in one of the subjects listed in the following section and should have been inspected within one year prior to the deadline for submitting manuscripts.

The OSF-SA has established a American University Scholarships program to give the media an experienced journalist with the resources to pursue issues of topical interest. Until now, the alliance has enabled a number of journalists to conduct ground breaking research on various issues with the aim of enriching understanding of the community and encourage debate about these issues.

For 2011, the American University Scholarships Foundation experienced a call to journalists seeking innovative and unconventional approaches to fundamental challenges of an open society. Applications are invited from interested journalists and media practitioners with a deep understanding and a human rights approach to research and produce analytical pieces on:

Political party funding in South Africa;
Climate change in Africa;
Strengthen community participation in the traditional system of government.

To qualify, candidates must:

Have a minimum of three years of journalistic experience;
Having strong investigative journalism skills;
Show in-depth knowledge about the chosen topic;
Able to adhere to set deadlines.

American University Scholarships Successful candidates will be expected to:

Conduct thorough research on one of the topics mentioned above;
Research and produce a series of reports or any form of media products, including innovative public education project, which will provide in-depth analysis and insight into selected topics;
Provide evidence of their work published.

PhD Position American University Scholarships on Environmental Archives

American University Scholarships An important task of the PhD project is to study the presence of selenium in the archives of the continent such as the Loess deposits and peat swamps. Therefore, this PhD project has a strong focus on solid phase material, ie rock, soil and peat and involves the use of HG-AFS, ICP-MS/ICP-OES, XRF, XRD and synchrotron-based techniques. The mobility of selenium in this guide will be investigated in field and laboratory. We offer a growing research environment that involves collaboration with leading international partner institutions.

We are American University Scholarships looking for people who are highly motivated skilled and interested in a challenging interdisciplinary research interests in Quaternary geology and inorganic geochemistry. Candidates who earned a master's degree in science, soil science or equivalent and have a strong background in instrumental analysis. American University Scholarships Fluency in English is mandatory and a good knowledge of German is an additional asset. Ideally, the work starts between August 2011 and October 2011.
